Bangkok Nightclub Fire Kills 27 at Lat Phrao Venue
A fire at a popular Bangkok live-music venue in the early hours of 13 July 2026 killed at least 27 people and injured 63 more, with 22 of those in critical condition. The blaze broke out around midnight at Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao, a bar on Soi Lat Phrao 1 near the Lat Phrao Intersection, and was contained by roughly 12:30am. Roughly 90 people were inside when the fire started, including customers, musicians, and staff. Both emergency exits were found to be obstructed, trapping many inside.
What Happened
Eyewitnesses and survivors describe a fast-moving sequence of events. A performer noticed smoke rising from an electrical switchboard above a fellow band member. The band immediately tried to get out, but the power cut out before the fire had spread through the building. At least one survivor reported smelling gas somewhere between five and ten minutes before the fire ignited.
Fire crews from the Sutthisan area arrived first, with reinforcements coming from Phahonyothin, Huai Khwang, and Phaya Thai. The fire was contained in about 30 minutes.
Blocked Exits
Most victims were found concentrated in the bathrooms and near the two emergency exits. Both exits were obstructed. One was blocked by a candy sales table; the other, located in the kitchen area, was blocked by stored objects. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt visited the scene and confirmed that the obstruction of both exits will be a central focus of the official investigation. He also noted that the venue's condition after the fire did not match what was recorded during its last inspection.
Inspection and Licensing
The venue held a restaurant-with-live-music license, which permitted it to operate only until midnight. It was not licensed as a nightclub, a distinction that carries different regulatory requirements. A safety inspection carried out in April 2026 found the venue compliant on all counts: two emergency exits, working emergency lighting, and functioning fire extinguishers all passed. Whatever conditions existed at the time of the fire were not consistent with that record.
The venue owner was injured in the fire and had not been interviewed at the time of reporting.
The Band
A performing band had 11 members present that night. Two of them died, including the singer's girlfriend.
Official Response
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Bangkok Governor Chadchart both visited the scene. The investigation is ongoing.

This fire follows a documented pattern in Thai entertainment venues. A similar tragedy occurred at the Santika Club in 2009, and blocked emergency exits have been a recurring problem in the years since.
A few practical things worth keeping in mind when visiting crowded late-night venues with live music:
- Check where the exits are as soon as you arrive, and note whether they look clear
- A venue operating as a "restaurant with live music" may feel and function like a nightclub but faces lower regulatory scrutiny
- A recent passed inspection does not guarantee conditions will be safe on any given night
- Exits near kitchens and bathrooms can be compromised during emergencies; look for alternatives
