Bangkok Nightclub Fire Kills 27, Triggers Safety Crackdown Across Thailand
A deadly fire at a Bangkok nightclub has claimed at least 27 lives, injured dozens more, and set off a wave of safety inspections at entertainment venues across the country, including in Phuket. The incident raises serious questions about fire safety standards at Thai nightlife venues, and has direct relevance for tourists travelling anywhere in Thailand.
What Happened in Bangkok
The fire broke out at Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao, a nightclub near Lat Phrao Intersection in Bangkok. Witness footage captured thick black smoke and flames visible at the main entrance. At least 27 people were killed and 22 others remain in critical condition, with dozens more injured.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt confirmed that both emergency exits were obstructed at the time of the fire. One was blocked by a table set up to sell sweets. Unconfirmed reports circulating online allege that a second exit was routinely kept locked to stop customers leaving without settling their bill, and that staff were collecting payments even as people tried to evacuate. The nightclub owner was injured in the fire and remains hospitalised. An investigation is ongoing.
Phuket's Response
Phuket Governor Chotnarin Kerdsom described the Bangkok fire as "a warning even though it occurred outside the province" and ordered immediate safety inspections across all entertainment venues, hotels, restaurants, and public buildings on the island. All 19 of Phuket's local administrative organisations will assess fire prevention systems, emergency exits, equipment, and building code compliance. Emergency drills and equipment checks are being prepared islandwide. Pattaya is also conducting similar checks following the incident.
Separate Incident: Phuket Rooftop Fall
On July 12, a foreign man fell from a second-floor canopy roof on Thep Anusorn Road in Wichit district, Phuket. He had reportedly thrown bottles onto the street on two occasions before the fall. His identity, nationality, and current condition have not been released. CCTV footage from the area is under review.
