Thailand Restores 30-Day Visa-Free Entry for Indian Tourists
India is back on Thailand's 30-day visa-free list as of July 14, 2026, reversing a policy change from May that had cut Indian visitors to a 15-day visa-on-arrival window. The reversal comes after Indian visitor numbers dropped by nearly 20%, prompting the government to reconsider.
What Changed in May 2026
Earlier this year, Thailand's Cabinet ended a temporary 60-day visa exemption that had covered citizens of 93 countries and territories. The official reason was abuse by some foreign visitors, including illegal work and unauthorized business activity. Thailand moved back to a standard 30-day exemption for 57 countries, but Indian nationals were dropped from that list entirely, shifted instead to visa-on-arrival with a maximum 15-day stay and a 2,000 baht fee (an e-visa option was available at 1,000 baht).
Why Thailand Reversed Course
Tourism and Sports Minister Surasak Phancharoenworakul cited the impact directly: the policy change had caused "a decline of nearly 20% in Indian visitor numbers" and "created confusion among some Indian travellers, affecting their decisions to visit Thailand." He also noted that "Indian tourists remain an important target market for Thailand's tourism industry." The numbers made the case.
What Indian Visitors Get Now
Indian nationals arriving from July 14, 2026 onward receive:
- 30 days visa-free entry (no fee)
- No visa-on-arrival requirement
- No e-visa application needed for short stays
A Word of Caution
The policy is not guaranteed to be permanent. Minister Surasak made clear the government "could review or amend the policy in the future if authorities find that visitors misuse the longer period of stay." In other words, if overstays become a problem, the window could shrink again.
Other Updates in the Same Announcement
Citizens of Seychelles and Mauritius were also granted a 15-day visa exemption as part of the same cabinet decision. For travelers from countries outside the standard 57-nation exemption list, shorter visa-on-arrival or exemption periods may still apply, and that situation remains under review.
